The Handbook of Strategic BBU Activities

Buildit 5 article

The Handbook of Strategic BBU Activities is the main result of the BuildIT project. The need to create this document arises from the fact that every day we are asked for new competences and that the labour market is more and more competitive and demands an increase in key competences for employability from people looking for work. Jobseekers are very often not aware of how they can enhance their skills to improve their employability potential. For this reason, this document is intended to be an educational tool that addresses the need for creative and interesting approaches to draw adult learners into courses, particularly the underqualified ones who have trouble grasping abstract ideas and keeping up with the rapidly changing demands of the labor market.

It also achieves the goals of providing adult educators with cutting-edge educational tools, designing new models and educational resources, and changing the perception of adult learning into one that is more appealing and approachable.   It also targets the priority of extending and developing the competencies of educators, supporting the establishment of and access to upskilling pathways for adults with a low level of skills.

The Handbook is structured into 3 modules containing the explanation of the methodology, steps to design strategic activities based on the BBU methodology with a conceptual map and examples of 12 strategic activities, each of them meant to target the development of one of the 12 transversal competences according to the Catalogue of transversal competences. The methodology used in this manual is indeed the BBU methodology (BUILDING-BASED UPSKILLING) that was conceived as an innovative and interactive educational methodology based on the use of building blocks, Lego and puzzles to conceptualise and visualise abstract concepts. In this way, the activity will help students remember and concretise complicated concepts in a simpler way, and the learning experience will be more enjoyable because it is done in groups and using game dynamics. These factors combined will make learning more effective.

This methodology was inspired by existing methodologies, combined with coaching communication techniques in order to provide a structured method and the creation of tailor-made activities following the competences of the Catalogue of Key Transversal Competences for Employability. But what are these competences? Mentioning the catalogue itself “These are the competences individuals have which are relevant to jobs and occupations other than the ones they currently have or have recently had. These competences may also have been acquired through non-work or leisure activities or through participation in education or training. More generally, these are competences which have been acquired in one context or to master a special situation/problem and can be transferred to another context”.

The 12 transversal competences, which have been taken up and s in developed into strategic activities in the Handbook are:

1. Intercultural skills and global awareness

2. Flexibility & adaptability

3. Strategical & innovative thinking

4. Organization and time management

5. Decision making

6. Teamwork

7. Empathy/ability to build relationships

8. Problem solving

9. Learning orientation

10. Negotiation skills

11. Leadership
